Well, that depends on who you ask. Over the course of my career, I have worked in several environments and I have learned a lot about different treatment styles. Sometimes, this is because of the therapist’s actual education. Sometimes, this is because of their philosophy on treatment. Sometimes, this is dictated by the agency/practice that they work in.
However, the overall goal of therapy, in my opinion, is to give the client a safe space to discuss things that are causing them to have problems within their own lives in a judgment free environment. It is also to help them find ways and means to get their needs met mentally, emotionally, and, on occasion, spiritually. During my career, I have seen people from all walks of life, but each of them has been in need of support for their life.
When we end the stigma associated with therapy and mental health, we will be better equipped to engage in better communication without fear. I am on a mission to end the stigma associated with mental health, therapy, and the helping professions.
I encourage you to help me end this stigma by sharing this or any of my posts and allowing open communication with your friends and family.
I am a very laidback woman. I am a Licensed Certified Social Worker, and I have been in practice in the fields of mental health and substance abuse for over 15 years. I love what I do and I have a passion for helping to end the stigma associated with mental health.
